01 · Travel season

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The Maldives is warm throughout the year, with average temperatures generally between 25 and 32°C. According to the national meteorological service, the drier northeast monsoon usually runs from January to March, while the wetter southwest monsoon normally lasts from mid-May to November. April and December are transitional months.

The wetter season does not necessarily mean rain all day. Showers are often followed by sunny spells. Conditions can vary between islands and atolls, so uninterrupted sunshine can never be guaranteed.

January–March

More sunshine, less rain and stronger demand. Popular resorts are best booked early.

April and December

Transitional months with the possibility of excellent weather but greater variability.

Mid-May–November

More showers and wind, often balanced by better prices and rewarding marine encounters.

02 · The foundation

The right island matters more than the highest star rating.

Two resorts in the same category and price range can offer completely different experiences. We begin with the travellers' priorities and only then select the island.

01

Island size

Would you prefer a tiny barefoot island or more restaurants, activities and space?

02

Lagoon and house reef

Is a shallow turquoise lagoon or an accessible living reef more important?

03

Atmosphere

Quiet couples' retreat, lively resort life or family facilities?

04

Transfer

How much time and what type of experience would you choose after arriving in Malé?

05

Meal plan

Half board, full board or a genuinely comprehensive all-inclusive package?

06

Budget

Compare the full journey including flights, transfer and local charges.

03 · Reaching your island

Speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight?

Your international flight ends in Malé, but your holiday usually begins on another island. The resort's location determines the onward transfer.

Speedboat

For resorts closer to Malé. More flexible and often available by day and evening; journey time depends on sea conditions.

Seaplane

A scenic daytime flight to more distant atolls. Timings are coordinated with international arrivals and daylight.

Domestic flight + boat

For the most remote atolls. A local flight is usually followed by a short speedboat journey.

Important: local operators set the exact transfer schedule. Late arrivals or early departures may require an overnight stay near Malé.

04 · Where would you wake up?

A villa's position matters as much as its size.

An overwater villa is iconic, but it is not automatically the best choice for every trip. Beach villas offer direct sand access and often more shade; water villas provide privacy and direct lagoon access.

Beach villa

Direct access to the beach, a natural setting and often a practical layout for families.

Water villa

Lagoon views and direct water access. With young children, resort rules always need checking.

Pool villa

More private space, but pool size, orientation and privacy vary considerably.

Sunrise or sunset side

Sunset is not automatically better: wind, currents, beach quality and reef position also matter.

05 · Meal plans

Not all all-inclusive packages are equal.

You cannot simply walk to a restaurant outside most resort islands, so the meal plan strongly affects both the experience and final cost.

Breakfast

Maximum freedom, but every other meal and drink is paid locally.

Half board

Usually breakfast and dinner. A good fit if you eat lightly during the day.

Full board

Three main meals, although drinks are often charged separately.

All inclusive

May include selected drinks, minibar, activities or à la carte dining. The detailed inclusions are what matter.

06 · Finding your match

A honeymoon and a family holiday need different details.

There is no single perfect resort for everyone. The right choice matches the island's strengths to your plans.

Honeymoon and anniversary

Private villas, excellent dining, calm surroundings, sunsets and couples' experiences.

Family holiday

A shallow beach, short transfer, kids' club, family villa, slides and flexible dining can be decisive.

Diving and snorkelling

House reef access, currents, dive sites and the quality of the dive centre matter.

Complete relaxation

A smaller island, quiet beach, accomplished spa and an unhurried rhythm can offer true rest.

07 · Planning the cost

The room rate is only part of the total.

Always compare like with like. A lower room rate can cost more once the transfer and a less inclusive meal plan are added.

  • international flights and baggage
  • return resort transfer
  • meal plan and drinks
  • Green Tax and applicable local charges
  • travel insurance
  • excursions, spa and special experiences

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority currently lists Green Tax at USD 12 per person per night at tourist resorts; children under two are exempt. We recheck every applicable charge when preparing a quote.

08 · Entry

What should you arrange before departure?

Tourist visas are granted on arrival and generally require no pre-approval. Entry conditions should nevertheless be rechecked before every trip.

  • a machine-readable passport valid for at least one month on arrival
  • a return ticket and confirmed prepaid booking at a registered accommodation
  • evidence of sufficient funds for the stay
  • the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival
  • entry rules for any transit country

The official IMUGA declaration is free. Avoid third-party websites that charge for submission.

09 · Before departure

Quick checklist

  • passport and IMUGA confirmation
  • flight, accommodation and transfer vouchers
  • appropriate travel insurance
  • bank card and USD if needed
  • sun protection and suitable water shoes
  • medication in original packaging
  • resort dress code and baggage rules

Which is the best month to visit the Maldives?

January to March generally brings more sunshine, but good weather is possible year-round. Price, marine life and the purpose of the journey also matter.

How many nights should I stay?

Seven to ten nights is comfortable for one resort. For a longer flight journey or a two-island combination, ten to fourteen nights may work better.

No. The official Traveller Declaration is free and can be completed within 96 hours before arrival.
